Artist’s statement
Over the course of many years of practice and diverse training, Michel T. Desroches has gradually developed an aesthetic inquiry oscillating between representation and abstraction, demonstrating both mastery of academic rendering and the assertion of spontaneous gestures. Executed on canvas or wood, using graphite and acrylic paint, his current productions are punctuated by black lines and built through multiple layers and gestural back-and-forth. They assert themselves between the processes of image construction and deconstruction.
As emotional reading zones, faces, characters, or face silhouettes are his main subjects. Fragmented or exploded, they appear and disappear within the compositions of his works, amid patterns, textures, combinations of brightness, and color vibrations, evoking an inexhaustible number of possibilities. For the artist, it is about constructing and arranging fragments and elements so they coexist in balance within a whole. The result is an art imbued with energy, spontaneity, and humanity through which Michel T. Desroches expresses himself and communicates.
